I found myself liking Eric more and more as the book went on. This time, Sookie Stackhouse takes on a small job in Dallas for the the vampires, or more specifically, Eric the sheriff of Area 5. The Southern Vampire Mysteries series by Charlaine Harris moves right along, as evident by how quickly I finished the second book, Living Dead in Dallas. While the first book sets up the town and fictional world Sookie inhabits, the second book makes readers more familiar with Eric, Pam, Sam, and Bill. The plot, or more specifically, the mystery in the second book engaged me more than the first one, but that may be because I knew about the first one before I read it. But that's not all. There has also been a murder in her own town which she has to get to the bottom of.Living Dead in Dallas builds more on the handful of main characters than the previous book. I liked that there were actually two story arcs which were both resolved by the time the book ended. While cliffhangers are good to keep readers wanting more, closure is more satisfying.
Overall the novel seems a little rushed and hectic, maybe that is why the errors occurred. The series appears to be young adult with tendencies toward action and suspense, not horror per se. I calculated roughly 28 years old since she states her parents died before she was 7 years old (during her 6th year, 6 to 6.9 range) when her parents died nearly 20 years (19 to 19.9 range) before vampires came out 2.5 years ago.
Werewolves are the featured culture and the author addresses the classic figure with her own viable essence from Sookie's first person point of view. A couple new characters offer fresh drama and eye candy for Sookie. The local vampires encourage Alcide Herveaux, a Werewolf in Mississippi, help Sookie find vampire Bill by posing as Sookie's friend in a bar catering to the supernatural.
As the third installment in the "Southern Vampire Mysteries", "Club Dead" has Sookie visiting a different locale, Jackson, Mississippi within a year of the original book. Sookie's claim to be 26 years old would be the most obvious.
Expect more of the typical behavior from Eric and sightings of "Bubba" as Bill's absence leaves a void in her life. Unfortunately the "Were" transformation isn't experienced for the reader's benefit, it occurs out of sight. The unnecessary inconsistencies bothered me, especially regarding attention to detail.
Therefore 6+19+2.5=27.5 years old minimum or 29.3 years old maximum. I recommend this collection to any fan of the vampire genre.Thank you.
Already going downhill, but there is a market for the lowest common denominator-good for "by the pool". Inconsistent and formulaic (is Nora Roberts writing as Charlaine Harris now). The book series started out pretty interestingly albeit with a few continuity errors. Take one look at the author and you'll see why she is living vicariously through a sexy, buxom young blonde. Hope the author isn't enjoying enough success that she fails to listen to her editors.
The introduction of a new character, werewolf Alcide Herveaux elevated the interest quotient in this book even more. What I liked in this third instalment, is the way some of the main characters were explored in more detail and given more definition.
Bill seems distant, and tells Sookie that he is busy with a project assigned to him by the vampire Queen of Louisiana, and has to travel to Seattle. In "Club Dead", the third in the Southern Vampire Mysteries, readers get to see another side to the 'perfect' Southern gentleman vampire Bill, and this has interesting consequences for Sookie and Bill's relationship.
As Sookie leaves on her assignment, she is accompanied by werewolf Alcide Herveaux - the destination being Jackson, Mississippi and in particular, Vampire King Russell Edgington's Club Dead.As has become a trademark in this series, the plot is engaging, and moves quickly, and the way it is written, simple yet effective, helps readers plow through the story at breakneck speed. With Bill gone, Eric, owner of vampire haunt, Club Fangtasia informs Sookie that Bill has gone missing, and that they need to find Bill before Bill divulges classified vampire information that may put them at risk.
Eric also tells Sookie some unsavory information about her BF Bill, having to do with Bill's involvement with another vampire, Lorena. The complication in Sookie's relationship with Bill was a great touch as it was becoming a tad predictable, until now. Also, readers are given more insight into werewolves, and the differences between werewolves, and wolfmen.
Recommended for fans of the genre.
This book was was the next book in the series, and i felt it was good enough to read through without stopping but not jaw dropping good.
